> The Defensive Premium Harvest strategy delivered a strong July, returning +1.17% against a near-flat S&P 500 and outperforming the benchmark by 113 basis points as a historically wide variance risk premium allowed the short-put book to accrete premium steadily while the VIX call hedge absorbed mid-month volatility spikes without disrupting income. The result demonstrates the strategy's core promise in action: positive, differentiated returns generated independently of market direction, with the protective structure and trend filter both present but neither required to intervene.

Defensive Premium Harvest delivered +1.17% in July against a benchmark return of +0.03%, outperforming by 113 basis points in a month that simultaneously tested the strategy's income engine and validated its hedge structure. The environment was, on balance, favourable: with VIX closing at 17.09 against 20-day realised volatility of just 11.9%, the Variance Risk Premium was historically wide, allowing the short-put book to collect and retain meaningful premium as implied volatility persistently overshot subsequent realised moves.

The VIX call hedge did incremental work during the mid-month semiconductor-driven spike but was not called upon to absorb a systemic shock — the kind of dispersion-dominated, moderate-volatility regime where the strategy's net-risk sizing keeps hedge costs contained while the income leg accrues.

The S&P 500's narrow 0.13% decline, driven overwhelmingly by a handful of mega-cap technology names rather than broad market weakness, meant the trend filter had no cause to flatten the book — the index held above its long-horizon trend throughout, and the income and hedge legs remained fully deployed. The oil surge and Fed dissent introduced a more hawkish rate backdrop, but the absence of a systemic equity drawdown meant neither the put book nor the trend filter were stressed. A clean month for the mechanics.

### Talking points

- The strategy turned a flat equity market into meaningful positive returns. While the S&P 500 was essentially unchanged in July, the strategy added +1.17% by systematically collecting the premium that options markets were pricing well above what volatility actually delivered — an edge that exists independently of whether equities rise or fall.
- The built-in hedge absorbed mid-month turbulence without derailing returns. A sharp semiconductor selloff briefly pushed volatility higher in mid-July, exactly the scenario the strategy's VIX call position is designed for. The hedge offset the stress on the short-put book, and as volatility retreated, premium income continued to accrue — demonstrating the protective structure working as intended.
- The strategy stayed fully invested because the market never broke structurally lower. The trend filter — the mechanism that would step the book to cash in a genuine downturn — had no cause to activate. End clients benefit from this design: protection is available when conditions genuinely deteriorate, but the strategy does not sacrifice income by sitting on the sidelines during ordinary volatility.
